Trailer for the Slon Family Program at the 21st Animateka Festival

Since 2019, I’ve been a mentor with the Slon Association for Film Education.
The association is dedicated mainly to animated film. Together with children, we create short animated films – most often using stop motion. Our films travel the world, finding their place at children’s film festivals near and far.
The film was inspired by the book Cof pa hop, written by Sanja Janša and illustrated by Tanja Komadina, used with permission from Mladinska knjiga.

In collaboration with the Divja misel Institute, which programmatically manages Vodnikova domačija, we carried out the project Bringing Children’s Stories to Life, which is connected to their existing project Fairy Tale Studio. Fairy Tale Studio is a laboratory project at Vodnikova domačija in Šiška, designed to foster storytelling skills in children. In this project, children develop their skills in telling and inventing their own stories. One of these stories, The Mouse and the Rainbow, was transformed into an animation.

Wherever we look, we see a circle. In the sun and the pupil of an eye, in a flower and a steering wheel, a ring and a cup — even the letter O is a circle. With a spinning record player and round-shaped instruments, musician Tea Vidmar and illustrator Janja Kosi draw circles through drawing, song, and animation.

Sloth Vojko is dealing with the daily task of washing his fur. But since when have sloths been doing laundry? Can they even do it? It turns out that this chore isn’t one of Vojko’s strengths. Something goes wrong and the fur shrinks. What now? Does that mean that from now on, Vojko has to run through the world naked?
This short animation illustrates a scene from the traditional Slovene tale Martin Krpan, written by Fran Levstik. The story follows Martin Krpan, a strong, hardworking, but somewhat simple-minded man who embodies the spirit of a typical Slovene of that era. He used to smuggle salt on his scruffy but resilient horse, and one winter day, he happened to block the emperor’s carriage on a narrow path. To let the emperor pass, Krpan simply lifted his horse out of the way—an act that left the emperor astonished.
Years later, the emperor summoned Krpan to Vienna to fight Brdavs, a brutal warrior who had already defeated all of the empire’s finest knights. In Vienna, Krpan and his skinny horse became the subject of ridicule among the nobles and palace guards. But Krpan confidently claimed that none of the royal horses were as strong as his—and that he could toss any of them out of the barn. This particular moment in the story inspired the animation.
The animation was presented in a traditional format using a mutoscope.
